Cuddly Toys - Young & Dangerous The Best Of Cuddly Toys

Reviewed by Alan Sharif on 09/08/2005

Back in 1980 I eagerly purchased the first single by a band called Cuddly Toys whom I had never heard of. I still have it to this day, through nothing to play it on! The reason for this was because the A side was none other than a cover of ‘Madman’, a song co-written by David Bowie and Marc Bolan but never recorded by either. I was most interested to hear it and was impressed by what the band had done with the song. An album, ‘Guillotine Theatre’, followed and to my surprise their own material was often equally good, if not better.

The history of bands can sometimes be strange, amusing, or just downright interesting. The history of Cuddly Toys is definitely all three, but sadly ended in tragedy. It is far to long to tell here but should you purchase both this and their previous CD, The Complete Raped Collection, the sleeve notes tell some of their amazing story. I suspect the full story would make a very entertaining book. More information can be gleaned by doing a Google search for guitarist, Faebhean Kwest, which will turn up some very interesting interviews. They started life as a punk band called Raped whom mutated into the very Glam Cuddly Toys, then changed their sound to a more Glam/New Romantic mixture in order to appeal to the prevailing trend of the time. The band later split without having had much success in the UK which was a real shame because they made some great music.

The material on this CD stretches from 1979-81 so if you are not keen on punk, fear not, for there is none to be found here. The music covers their Glam and New Romantic phases and whilst there are some clunkers many of the eighteen tracks are well worth having. Personally I am not keen on some of their New Romantic stuff through the single ‘It’s A Shame’ is rather good, being closer to their Glam roots. A couple of their earlier singles also let the side down, ‘Astral Joe’ is a hideous sub Gary Numan effort and ‘Someone’s Crying’ is far too poppy for my tastes. However, there is a lot of good stuff here. Several tracks are very Ziggy Stardust indeed. Among my favourites are ‘Universe’, which is slow like ‘Rock And Roll Suicide’ and ‘Guillotine Theatre’ or ‘Broken Mirrors’, which are much more up-tempo. As with any ‘best of’ collection many of their true best, in my opinion, tunes are missing. For my money ‘Brain Saviour’, ‘My Commando’ ‘Time Warped Garden Of Love’ and ‘Alien’ are better than most of the tracks off of ‘Guillotine Theatre’ found here. So, if you like Cuddly Toys, and have the software required, buy the first album on vinyl and burn a copy onto CD for t

After reading this I thought 'ah I shall puruse the internet and find out a little more'...

After my search came back well pretty thin & giving me no more info than above I thought screw it I'll by the album! & I went straight to good ol' Amazon and ordered it on import from America for just £3.20...hmmm

A week later it came, cover exactly as seen on this review...more about my thoughts on the cover later...

After giving the album a listen I thought 'this is rather goood!!!'

Of course there is a Bowie influence, the track 'Madman' which I think is BEAUTIFUL has (Bowie/Bolan) credited writers...the only song ever to be written by both artists and has a GREAT tale in the sleevenotes of how they came to get & record the song stuff of legend!!!...

'Universe' could be a lost Spiders From Mars b-side, I can also find where The Auters got there sound ;)

Singer Sean Purcell tries his Bowie best on the track 'Full Circle' but this is more than a mere collection of Glam sounds, it has Romo flourishes as keyboards add a very 80's sound but not just in sound but in lyrical content too as many a lyric lean into Romo territory one can also hear a little Sparx albeit rather a punkier version in there too...

Also listening to the album I gave the sleeve notes a look. The first picture you see is of the singer Sean...who is rather pretty in longish 70's hair and lipstick...the next page is with him and the band whom remind me of early Japan but with a Brian Eno wannabe on the end ;) the third picture has the band in a very Romo outing short fluffy side parted hair with bleach and ties...

As the album finishes with 'Slowdown' my feelings were :-

This is a great collection of songs & sounds from a band who present clearly the transition from Eno to Rhodes...

In short I'd recommend it...

The promo video is awesome!!! it looks like it was recorded in the studios The Old Grey Whistle Test...for people un-aware it's the program that preceeded Later With...Bob Harris RULZ hehehe

Thank You Alan!!!!!!!!!

And I will so be trying out Sean's look on the cover his make-up & hair rocks on it

Hi Guy,

assuming you have a record player try and track down a copy of their 'Guillitine Theatre' album. If you like what you have heard so far you will not be disappointed.  Glad you enjoyed it. Spread the word!!!
